The IStructE Awards 2023 were held in Manchester on Friday 22 September.  RoC’s entry for Pearl Assurance House/Malmaison Hotel Manchester received two awards, Medium Project and Most Sustainable Project.

The project involved the re-modelling of the basement and 6 upper levels of a Grade II listed office building. The building was constructed in the  1950’s with Portland Stone masonry to the principal elevations.

The scope of the project  involved a vertical extension by addition of two floors and a full width horizontal extension to the rear elevation whilst retaining the principal facades. The basement retaining walls from a pre 1950’s building were re-used in the new scheme.

The existing structure comprised a concrete cased steel frame with clay pot concrete floors supported off pad foundations.

The most sustainable project award was presented as ultimately the re-use of the 52% of the existing structure with an estimated saving of 1300T of Carbon, using the RIBA 2025 targets at 800kg/m2 and reduced by 20% for fit out.

Congratulations to Jon Smith Design Director RoC Consulting and Phil Slaughter on this double award win.
